Long before I dipped my toe into beauty editorial, I knew about Sonya Dakar skin care. Her line was sweet relief for my teenage self plagued with acne, which I had the fortune of telling her in person when I moved to LA (curiously close to her clinic…!).
And that clinic, where she treats Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lawrence, transformed into a beauty oasis for some very deserving, chronically ill teens for the 7th annual Wish Upon a Teen spa day this week. Each teen was pampered with manicures by China Glaze, makeup by Jane, flower crowns by Bloom2Bloom, and of course a Sonya Dakar facial. “We’re all about normalizing their environment and giving them the opportunity to just be teenagers for a couple hours, a few times a year,” said Michelle Soto, founder of Wish Upon a Teen, during the event.
Celebrity guests, including fashion designer, Whitney Port and actress, Halston Sage, also spent the day with the girls, making their own floral headpieces and posing for selfies with their teen fans.
The transformation was immediate. Many of the girls entered unsure, shy even and left glowing with confident grins. It was apparent that after being exposed to chemotherapy and other medical procedures, a day of beauty was just what the doctor ordered.
