Every once in a while a beauty influencer or brand comes along that’s so extraordinary in their efforts to give back, attention must be paid. Each Feel Good Friday, we’ll highlight these do-gooders along with simple ways to support their efforts.
Robin McGraw knows a thing or two about making the world a better place.
The philanthropist and entrepreneur is half of a power duo (the other half being her husband, Dr. Phil) that steadfastly supports programs and services to improve the lives of men, women and children around the globe. That drive helped inspire Dr. Phil’s namesake program, The Dr. Phil Foundation, which helps build awareness and offer solutions to address the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual needs of children and families.
And in addition to the extensive list of causes she’s championed like American Red Cross and Girl Scouts of the USA, McGraw launched her own charitable foundation, When Georgia Smiled, the Robin McGraw Revelation Foundation, which creates programs that help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault get back on their feet and look toward safe and fulfilling futures.
Her passion for touching lives through charitable efforts extends into her newly launched lifestyle brand, Robin McGraw Revelation. The beauty product line in particular is not only effective (that’s based on personal experience!) but there’s something refreshingly light and playful in the presentation of each lip gloss, fragrance and more. It’s the positive energy that she fuses into each product (check out these adorable tin packages) that truly sets her brand apart. And because McGraw believes that any business venture is also an opportunity to give back, 100 percent of the net proceeds from certain products in the line are donated to When Georgia Smiled.
Here McGraw reveals her new app idea that’s helping save lives, the best Mother’s Day gift with a feel-good factor and more.
Alexis Farah: You wear so many hats as a do-gooder! Can you tell me about When Georgia Smiled, the Robin McGraw Revelation and any other initiatives you feel especially close to?
Robin McGraw: When I launched my foundation in October 2013, my mission was to help all men, women and children who suffer from domestic violence and sexual assault live healthy, safe and joy-filled lives. We launched with two very powerful tools to assist. The first, the Aspire Initiative, a free interactive domestic violence curriculum to educate tweens, young adults and adults about abusive relationships. The program is available in English and Spanish and is being used in schools across the country. The second tool is the Aspire News app, a free, potentially life-saving smartphone app powered by Yahoo that allows the user to create pre-written text or voice messages to be sent to designated numbers. I’m so proud to say the app has been downloaded over 300,000 times around the world and has also been recognized on Capitol Hill by the National Health Collaborative on violence and abuse as one of the two apps in 2014 most beneficial in the fight to end domestic violence.
Another organization near and dear to my heart is the Girl Scouts of the USA. I was a Girl Scout and also a brownie troop leader before I even had children of my own. It’s an honor to be involved with this incredible organization that has such a positive impact on young women, helping them to reach their best potential.
AF: The Me O’ My collection from your line is so whimsical and fun, so perfect for Mother’s Day, which is around the corner. Why do you think every woman should shop the brand and do you have a favorite product?
RM: It is definitely no accident the acronym for Me O’ My happens to be MOM! This entire collection was designed with Moms in mind and was inspired by my grandchildren, Avery and London. Some of the products were even inspired by my own children who are now grown men. The Me O’ My collection all started just about two years ago when I was named National Celebrity Spokesperson for the Girl Scouts of the USA in 2014. I attended the National Convention and I wanted to create a product we could hand out to all the Girl Scouts, troop leaders and parents in attendance. I love anti-bacterial wipes, especially now being a Grandma. We gave out “Handy Candy” wipes in a variety of fun colors to everyone at the convention – they are great for everyone to keep in their purses, diaper bags and pack for a vacation. After the success of Handy Candy, I wanted to go back and create even more products that were useful and everyone would need. One of my favorite products is the Chickee Chew bubble gum – the girlie girl bubble gum that will always make you feel fun and young your entire life! Who doesn’t love to have fun and blow bubbles? Another favorite is the Lippy Lovey, as we say, “the balm your lips will love!” My favorite dessert happens to be Wedding Cake so we of course have a Wedding Cake flavor lip balm as well as a Lemon Gelato flavor, inspired by Avery’s favorite dessert and Blueberry Muffin for London’s favorite. In addition to these, you’ll notice there’s a running theme of hearts and love featured in the other products in the line as well: Kissy Permissy breath mints, Sticky Stacker sticky note sets, Flossy Glossy gloss picks, Dog-Gone-It and Owie Meowie bandages and Nosey Cozy tissue pockets. I truly believe love is always in the air and all around us. Being a Grandma to these precious grandbabies continues to inspire me each and every day.
AF: Aside from buying products from Robin McGraw Revelation, are there any other ways our readers can support your efforts?
RM: As women, we are all so naturally hard on ourselves. We wear many hats and juggle so many different tasks in our daily lives. I want every reader to know it is OK to put yourself first, take care of you so that you can better love and support those around you – and do it without an ounce of guilt. If there’s one thing I would love to encourage, let’s continue as women to adopt a belief or a feeling to come together, support and build each other up, unite as a group – not divide, judge or criticize. We’re all in this together. Ladies, always remember, a queen without her king is still a queen!
